In a typical U.S. home it has been reported that heating and cooling is responsible for nearly 48% of overall energy usage, making it the largest energy expense for most families.

Johnson Controls (JCI 63.660 -0.173%), one of the leading providers of HVAC, Fire and Security systems in the world, is changing how spaces are viewed and controlled. As the inventors of the first thermostat, Johnson Controls has innovated once again with the GLAS thermostat.

GLAS is a simple to use, elegant thermostat that brings leading energy savings and air quality monitoring to everyday spaces. According to the video (below), the GLAS thermostat appears to include presence-detection capabilities, shows air quality, and usage reports are able to be sent daily.

Johnson Controls is rumored to be handling all of the hardware and product manufacturing while partnering with Microsoft (MSFT 421.430 -0.052%) for the software side of things. Harnessing the power of Windows 10 IoT Core OS, Cortana voice services and the Azure cloud platform.
